Folk Factory Youth (secondary aged 11-18)
Wednesday 6:15pm-7:15pm Come and join our folk big band! Any instrument. Any standard! Limited spaces available! The Folk Factory is a music ensemble dedicated to exploring folk music, tunes, songs and dance from around the world in a fun and friendly way. We learn by ear, write and arrange our own pieces and do lots of performances, in Sheffield and much further afield! Our aim is to connect and engage young people with their folk heritage in lively and relevant ways, learning traditional tunes and creating new ones. No grades needed, open to any instruments, but basic knowledge of your instrument is required. Instruments not provided- we do have a keyboard and a piano. Each group is £6 per week, billed termly. Sibling discount and bursaries are available. We run alongside the school terms. Taster sessions are free, so come and try a session before signing up for the term! Snacks provided each week! Term Dates Winter term: Wednesday 13th September 2023- Wednesday 20th December 2023 inclusive. (Half term: 25 Oct 2023) Spring term: Wednesday 10th January 2024-Wednesday 27th March 2024 inclusive. (Half term: 14th Feb 2024) Summer term: Wednesday 17th April 2024- Wednesday 17th July 2024 inclusive. (Half term: 29th May 2024) At Folk Factory we pride ourselves on being an open and inclusive community, creating a place and part for everyone, regardless of experience. The ensemble is led by the ideas and needs of the young musicians, so youth voice is very important to us! Come along to develop your musicianship and confidence, in a fun and creative ensemble. We have created quite a community over the years, and many of our young people meet up to play outside of the ensemble, forming their own sessions, jams, ceilidhs and bands, or just to hang out and have fun. The young musicians can also benefit from the contacts and support we can offer if they wish to pursue folk music further- many of our musicians perform yearly at Cambridge Folk Festival, so the ensemble is a great place to meet and perform with like-minded musicians.
